Mai Po Nature Reserve is located in the northwest New Territories of Hong Kong. Mai Po is a wetland of internal importance especially for water birds i.e. a Ramsar Site. It is an important staging ground for many migratory water bird species along the East Asia Australasia Flyway. Many rare and endangered species such as the Spoon-billed Sandpiper can be found at Mai Po at the right time.
In a highly developed city like Hong Kong, seeing tens of thousands of birds in less than an hour’s drive is simply amazing. In the lecture, the importance of Mai Po and the conservation work and challenges in protecting the biodiversity there are discussed. In the field trip, students will have the chance to see many rare bird species as well as witnessing the threats on Mai Po from the nearby urban development.
